MY3 Community Project Showcase: Learning Through Action and Responsibility

As part of the MYP Community Project 2025–26, MY3 learners showcased their ongoing work to the Middle Years Parents. This meaningful engagement marked the first Community Project showcase in the run-up to the final MYP Community Project Exhibition.

What is the MYP Community Project?

The Community Project is a core component of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) undertaken by students in MY3. It invites learners to identify a real community need, explore it through inquiry, and take purposeful action to make a positive difference. The project places strong emphasis on student agency, reflection, and responsibility, while developing key skills such as research, planning, collaboration, communication, and self-management.

Through the Community Project, students move beyond academic learning to engage with the world around them—understanding impact, ethics, and the importance of sustained action.

The Showcase: A Reflective Checkpoint

For this first showcase, MY3 learners voluntarily set up stalls to present their projects, clearly articulating their goals, the communities they serve, success criteria, and evidence of action taken so far. Parents engaged in thoughtful conversations with students, asked questions, and offered feedback, gaining deeper insight into both the purpose and the process of the Community Project.

The showcase served as an important reflective checkpoint for learners.  It was an opportunity to pause, evaluate their progress, and consider next steps as they continue their journey toward the final exhibition. While some students chose to raise funds through sales-based initiatives, others focused on awareness-building and advocacy, highlighting the diverse ways in which meaningful community impact can be achieved.

Looking Ahead

This first MY3 Community Project Showcase reflects learning in action, where student voice, reflection, and responsibility come together. As learners continue to refine their projects, they will deepen their understanding of community needs and prepare for the culminating MYP Community Project Exhibition.

Most importantly, the showcase reinforced the value of authentic engagement and parent partnership, demonstrating how collaborative learning experiences can enrich understanding and empower students to create purposeful change.

The Shark Tank Experience: When Ideas Meet Opportunity

In the Shark Tank experience, students stepped confidently into the role of young entrepreneurs, pitching their product ideas with clarity, conviction, and purpose. This engaging platform encouraged learners to think creatively while grounding their ideas in real-world problem-solving.

Adding an authentic and exciting dimension to the experience, parents from our school community took on the role of the Sharks. They listened attentively, asked probing questions, and offered constructive feedback, challenging students to think deeper and refine their ideas in the moment. The dynamic exchange mirrored real entrepreneurial settings, making learning both meaningful and memorable.

Throughout the process, students demonstrated strong critical thinking, communication, and adaptability, responding thoughtfully to questions and iterating on their pitches with confidence. The experience highlighted their ability to articulate ideas, defend choices, and learn from feedback.

Together, these experiences exemplified learning beyond textbooks—where creativity meets application, and ideas are nurtured through authentic engagement. Most importantly, the Shark Tank experience showcased the power of parent partnership, reinforcing how collaboration between school and families can enrich the learning journey in truly impactful ways.

MY2 Chemistry Cook-Off: When Chemistry Meets the Kitchen

The MY2 corridors were transformed into a vibrant Chemistry Cook-Off, where learning stepped out of the laboratory and into everyday life through food.

Working collaboratively in teams, students designed, tested, and refined their own recipes, applying key chemistry concepts such as emulsification, browning reactions, acid–base reactions, and temperature control. Each dish became a hands-on experiment, requiring learners to think critically about how ingredients interact and how scientific principles influence taste, texture, and presentation.

Beyond cooking, students engaged deeply with the scientific process. They collected and analysed data, incorporated feedback, managed budgets, and made informed decisions to improve their outcomes. The Cook-Off also provided a platform for students to confidently articulate their learning, as they explained the chemistry behind their dishes to parents, teachers, and peers.

The Chemistry Cook-Off was a celebration of curiosity, collaboration, and applied learning. It highlighted how chemistry is not confined to textbooks or labs, but is deeply embedded in everyday experiences, nurturing learners who can connect knowledge to the real world with confidence and creativity.

Game Design with Purpose

In an inspiring blend of creativity, collaboration, and environmental awareness, our MY1 learners stepped into the Makerspace to design and build their own educational board games. Their mission: to deepen understanding of SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land.

Through hands-on creation, students explored real-world environmental challenges—pollution, biodiversity loss, conservation efforts—and transformed these ideas into interactive, imaginative games. Every element, from rules to artwork to gameplay strategy, was crafted to spark conversation and encourage players to think critically about protecting our ecosystems.

What emerged were not just board games, but thoughtful learning tools that reflect how creativity can amplify awareness and make complex global issues accessible.

By designing with purpose, our learners demonstrated that play can be powerful—and that young minds can lead the way in advocating for a sustainable future.

Listening to the Hundred Languages of Children

At Shiv Nadar School, our Early Years classrooms are places of wonder — where play based learning is not just an activity but a way of thinking, exploring, and expressing. We believe that every child speaks in a hundred different ways: through movement, art, storytelling, laughter, and curiosity. Our approach to play based learning in early childhood ensures that children discover, question, and create through meaningful, joyful engagement.

In our learning spaces, children are encouraged to express what they know and feel through hands-on play based learning activities. Every block tower, every song, every brushstroke tells a story of discovery and growth.

Exploration and Wonder

Our learners are natural explorers. They use their senses and imagination to make sense of the world  around them. During our recent inquiry into Living Things and Celebrations, classrooms came alive with small-world setups — jungles, oceans, and deserts filled with creatures and stories.

“Look, the polar bear needs snow!” a child explained, carefully placing cotton near a model animal. In that moment of learning through play in early childhood education, science and storytelling came together beautifully.

Learners also explored festivals through art and music. Bright colors, joyful patterns, and rhythmic beats filled our spaces. “I’m painting fireworks because they make people happy,” said another child, showing how emotion and creativity are deeply linked.

For teachers, every playful moment became a window into children’s thinking. Through observation and gentle questions — “What makes this animal special?” or “How does your celebration sound?” — we guided learners to deepen their curiosity and understanding. These interactions highlight how early years learning through play forms the foundation for inquiry and imagination.

Collaboration and Expression

As learners grow, their play naturally becomes more social and expressive. In our Early Years classrooms, collaboration is at the heart of play based learning.

During our unit on Communities and Family, learners designed homes and community spaces using blocks and loose parts. “We need a roof so it doesn’t rain inside,” one suggested. Together, they planned, built, and reflected — developing problem-solving and teamwork skills in the process.

Dramatic play areas buzzed with activity. Through role play, learners explored empathy, responsibility, and belonging — core benefits of play based learning in early childhood.

Art also became a shared language. Family portraits, drawings of plants, and collaborative murals reflected how children see growth, change, and connection. These experiences show how playing and learning through play in early childhood education support communication, confidence, and care — key qualities that define our philosophy.

Reflection and Representation

In EY3, reflection becomes a natural extension of play. Children revisit their experiences, look at photos, drawings, and portfolios, and talk about what they’ve learned.

“I remember when we planted this seed — now it’s growing!” a child shared during a reflection circle. Revisiting moments like these helps children see their own growth — both in skill and in self-awareness.

Storytelling and journaling are other powerful tools for reflection. When children narrate how they cared for plants or helped a friend, they express empathy and understanding. “I water my plant every day because it gets thirsty like me,” one child said — a small but profound connection between care and compassion.

Quiet moments of observation also play an important role. Watching shadows move or sketching leaves nurtures mindfulness, patience, and wonder, reinforcing the reflective side of early years learning through play.

The Many Languages of Learning

Across our Early Years classrooms, we see the harmony of many languages — exploration through play, expression through collaboration, and reflection through representation.

Every playful interaction reveals deep thinking. Every creation, conversation, and story tells us how children see their world.

At Shiv Nadar School, play based learning is the foundation of learning. It is through learning through play in early childhood education that children inquire, imagine, and build meaningful connections. When we listen closely — not only with our ears but with our hearts — we discover that children are not just learning about the world; they are teaching us how to see it.

“When we listen with wonder, we realize that every moment of play is a moment of learning.”

Children’s Day 2025: A Day Filled with Joy, Creativity, and Community Spirit

Children’s Day at our school was nothing short of spectacular, filled with the perfect blend of creativity, collaboration, and pure childhood joy. This year, our teachers and parent community came together to create an unforgettable experience for our learners — and in the process, became children themselves for a day!

Teachers Take the Stage

The celebrations began with our teachers putting together a delightful dance performance and skit especially for the students. Bursting with humour, energy, and heart, the performance set the tone for a day dedicated entirely to celebrating childhood.

A Fete to Remember — Curated by Parents

Our incredible parent community transformed the school into a vibrant Children’s Day Fete, complete with game stalls, workshops, and hands-on experiences. The campus buzzed with excitement as students explored a curated mix of classic and innovative activities.  Students excitedly moved from one activity to another, playing classic games such as Tambola, Shoot the Target, Ring Toss, and even the traditional Spin the Top. They also immersed themselves in high-energy experiences like obstacle courses, buzz wire challenges, and the ever-popular mystery box. Creative corners drew enthusiastic crowds with jewellery making, bookmark making and dance sessions that kept spirits high throughout the day.

Adding to the excitement was the signature workshop and a thrilling Math and Chemistry–themed Murder Mystery experience, where students used logic, clues, and teamwork to solve cleverly designed puzzles!

The day also included meaningful hands-on workshops. One especially impactful session was the Composting Workshop, where parent experts guided students through the basics of composting and worked with them to plant saplings to mark the occasion. This thoughtful activity blended environmental awareness with joyful learning, giving students a memorable way to contribute to the planet.

What made this Children’s Day truly special was the spirit that filled every corner of the campus. Teachers cheered, parents hosted and played with unfiltered enthusiasm, and students soaked in every moment of the celebration. Laughter, excitement, and wonder brought the community together in a way that felt both heartfelt and magical.

As the day drew to a close, one thing was clear: when parents, teachers, and students come together with a shared intention to celebrate childhood, the result is unforgettable.

Here’s to cherishing the joy of childhood — today and always.
